One of the most beautiful feelings in the world is the feeling of being in love

; and very few things can compare with the ecstasy that comes with it. You feel like you’re walking on cloud nine, you have this seemingly permanent smile on your face and you’re always happy with a spring in your step. This feeling becomes even more intense when one partner gets down on his knee to propose, and then begins the journey of marriage!

But sometimes, beyond the initial excitement, happy marriages soon run into troubled waters due to the actions and inactions of one or both partners. In some cases, they make up and move on; with some others, the relationship is never the same again and they both have to just endure the marriage.

Infidelity is about the commonest factor that brings about conflict in homes. This is because it is seen as a direct betrayal of trust, which is often hard to repair. Even though men are seen to be guiltier of this, findings have shown that they find it difficult to forgive a cheating wife. They believe it affects their masculinity, questions their sexual prowess, the possibility that they might not even be the father of their children and such thoughts that flood their minds. These make some men to file for divorce while some simply keep a distance from such women. On the other hand, women are seen to be more forgiving when they are cheated on, but sometimes too, things are never the same again in such marriages.

But really, what does the word “infidelity” actually mean? Most likely you imagine that a partner in a committed relationship had sexual intercourse with someone outside of their relationship. But cheating can look like many things to many people. To some it may indeed refer to sexual intercourse only. To others it could be anything from an emotional attachment to another, fantasies of other partners, a kiss. During the discovery of any extramarital affair, many questions surface about the true colors of the marriage relationship. Typically, the unfaithful spouse is found to have struggles with low self-esteem, alcoholism, drug abuse or even a sexual addiction. Additionally, marital issues that may have been brewing for years are often uncovered. Typically, these will be unspoken matters that have increasingly caused disconnection, silence and a gradual separating of hearts between spouses. But the affair isn’t going to be the answer to any of the marital concerns. An affair is often born out of a fantasy in which an individual seeks to escape the reality of either individual or marital problems. And the person outside the marriage is often seen as the temporary solution to real-life challenges.

Understanding the reasons behind infidelity can help you avoid its damage which includes outcomes such as depression, domestic violence, divorce, even homicide.

While it seems like men are still more likely than women to graze on greener pastures, there’s no doubt that both sexes are capable of cheating, and that the effects can be just as psychologically damaging regardless of your gender. And, contrary to popular opinion, research indicates that the reasons that people cheat have very little to do with how much sex they’re getting within their committed relationship.

According to experts, the most common cause of infidelity is a sense of
