Who says flirting has to be smooth? Sometimes the best way to someone’s heart is to make them laugh. Enter: the cheesy pickup line. Equal parts cringe and charm, these one-liners are so bad, they loop back around to being hilarious.

Research shows us that humor is a highly desired trait in a mate. Similarly, having a sense of humor and being able to appreciate someone’s wit is also a desired trait.

Whether you’re trying to break the ice or just looking to lighten the mood, these super cheesy pickup lines will—hopefully—have them rolling their eyes and groaning on the outside, but secretly smiling on the inside.

25 Cheesy Pick-up Lines

Here’s a collection of cheesy pickup lines. They’re cringey, they’re quirky, and they’re designed to make someone laugh, even if it’s at you—which still counts as a win, right?

So, go ahead and use these lines to shoot your shot:

  1. “If you were a vegetable, you’d be a cute-cumber.”

The Dos and Don’ts of Pickup Lines

Cheesy pickup lines are a high-risk, high-reward game. When done right, they can spark a laugh, a smile, or even a flirty back-and-forth that gets the conversation going. But when they miss the mark? Oof. Things can go downhill fast.

We asked the relationship experts for some dos and don’ts to keep in mind.

What to Do

These are some tips that can help you strike the right balance between cute and cringey:

  • Keep it playful: Pick-up lines work best when they’re lighthearted and silly. You’re not proposing marriage—you’re starting a fun conversation. Keep it fun and breezy.
  • Own the cheese: Confidence is key. If you’re going to drop a ridiculous line, say it like you know it’s awful. “I know this is terrible, but…”
  • Use positive body language: Even a bad joke can land if you deliver it with confidence, a smile, and a twinkle in your eye.
  • Learn how to use self-deprecating humor: Self-deprecating humor can be sweet or it can backfire, says Wendy Walsh, PhD, a psychology professor and relationship expert at DatingAdvice. “If you’re putting yourself down, it can look like extreme insecurity. On the other hand, if your self-deprecating joke is designed to make the other person look better and you as somebody who wants to learn, then it could be very effective.”
  • Build up a conversation: Remember that a pickup line can’t be the center of a conversation, says Cruz. It can be a fun opener, but keep the conversation going with real interest. Ask about something they like, share something about you, and build from there.
  • Be respectful: Flirty? Great. Creepy or objectifying? Not so much. Make them smile, not squirm. “Flirting can be fun, but it’s important to be genuine, respectful, and be mindful of the other person’s boundaries and personal space,” says Tatiana Rivera Cruz, MSW, LCSW, a therapist at ADHDAdvisor.
  • Read the room: If the person seems open to banter, go for it. If they look like they’re just trying to order their coffee in peace… maybe hold off. If they look uncomfortable or uninterested, back off gracefully.

What Not to Do

These are some actions to avoid while flirting with someone, to avoid making them uncomfortable:

  • Don’t approach someone without an invitation: Obtain an invitation before you approach anybody with a pickup line, says Dr. Walsh. “An invitation can be someone locking eyes with you, moving into your personal space, smiling at you, or flipping their hair with a sly grin and turning away.”
  • Don’t ignore their body language: If they’re giving you signals that they want to end the interaction, respect that.
  • Don’t be offensive or inappropriate: Avoid any comments that could be construed as sexist, racist, or otherwise offensive.
  • Don’t be overly aggressive or pushy: If they’re not interested, don’t insist.
  • Don’t be creepy: Avoid lines that are too sexual or suggestive, especially when meeting someone for the first time. “They can make the vibe uncomfortable and create a wall between the two of you,” says Cruz.
  • Don’t use a line you wouldn’t want to hear: If it makes you cringe to even say it out loud… maybe skip it.
  • Don’t use overly complex lines: Overly complex lines can be confusing and hard to follow. The simpler, the better, especially with cheesy lines.
  • Don’t make fun of their appearance: Even if you think it’s a compliment, don’t use a line that pokes fun at their appearance, as it can come across as rude.
  • Don’t expect every line to work: Sometimes, even the best cheesy lines fall flat. Although it’s too bad, there’s no harm done. Just laugh it off and move on.

Takeaways

At the end of the day, pickup lines are all about having fun. While a line may or may not land, the effort alone can be endearing. So go ahead—embrace the cringe, deliver the line, and see what happens. Worst case? You get a giggle and move on. Best case? You connect with someone and take it from there. Keep it light, keep it silly, and be willing to laugh at yourself.
