Women’s Aid responds to Victim Survey 2023

Sarah Davidge, Head of Research and Evaluation at Women’s Aid said:

“The latest Victim Survey highlights the desperate need for the criminal justice system to do more to meet the needs of the people who rely on it to protect them, safeguard their future and bring their perpetrators to justice. The survey shows 73% of victims weren’t confident that reporting a crime would lead to justice, a statistic that is sadly backed up by conviction rates for domestic abuse related crimes.

We know that 1 in 4 women will be subjected to domestic abuse in their lifetime, however our work with survivors shows us that countless women choose not to report their experiences to police or find that when they do the charges are eventually dropped before a conviction is made.

It is completely unacceptable that minoritised groups have a disproportionately negative experience, with almost half of disabled victims dissatisfied and less likely to report a crime to the police again. With the same true for certain ethnic groups, the system risks alienating those we know need support the most.

We need a coordinated response from the criminal justice system, including the police and victim support services, to work together to uphold the safety of survivors as their main priority to overhaul their response to victims.”
